Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of study was to investigate the images of nursing officers and to identify determinants of the images.
Methods: The subjects (n=1,017) were military personnel. Data were collected from the 1st of July to 30th of August, 2008. Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire based on a revision of Yang Il-Sims¡¯s (1996) Scale, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson coefficients, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression procedure by the SPSS/PC win 12.0 programs.
Results: In an analysis of images of the nursing officers, the highest mean scores were ¡¯military image¡¯ 3.60, which were followed by ¡¯traditional image¡¯ 3.58, ¡®social image¡¯ 3.25, and ¡¯personal image¡¯ 3.03. There was no significant difference in scores according to the subjects¡¯ individual characteristics or whether they had met nursing officers prior to the study. The results of analyzing the determinants of the images of nursing officers, the ¡¯subjective factor¡¯ was found to be most determinant at 4.02. The subjects responses about they perceived to be required most of nursing officers was ¡¯expert knowledge,¡¯ which was followed by ¡¯nursing skills,¡¯ ¡¯a sense of respectfulness and thoughtfulness,¡¯ and ¡¯responsibility¡¯.
Conclusion: To implement effective publicity activity for military personnel, it is necessary to develop various intervention strategies to influence the determinants of nurse¡¯s images in order to create a more professional image of nursing officers.
